PhD in Theological and Ministerial Studies

The S.T.D. forms the third cycle of ecclesiastical degrees and completes advanced theological formation, chiefly through a doctoral dissertation. It ranks at the top of Catholic church degrees in advanced theology and prepares students for scholarly careers serving the Church. The program reflects the Jesuit tradition by encouraging critical fidelity to Catholic teaching while examining how faith and culture interact in varied settings. Applicants need a finished licentiate in sacred theology or sacred scripture with a GPA of at least 3.7, proficiency in a modern research language, and a major research paper from that licentiate. Biblical Studies candidates must also show proficiency in a biblical language. Students enroll full time through a two-year residency period. The program also expects a diagnostic interview at the outset and a first year with four courses devoted to the chosen specialty, with all work finished within a fixed number of calendar years.
