Overview
Civil engineers plan, design, build and maintain structures and systems for public and private clients, including bridges, buildings, tunnels, roads, rail and water networks, and this major trains students for that work.
Students can aim their studies at construction, environmental, geotechnical or structural specialties and add a minor in economics, management, architecture, math or another engineering discipline. Research takes place in on- and off-campus labs, including facilities for construction, materials, geofoam, geosynthetics and environmental systems, totalling many thousands of square feet.
Students may join the local branch of the civil engineers' society or Engineers Without Borders. A dual degree with an MBA from the management school takes five years. The curriculum has engineering accreditation, and graduates have worked at Turner, Kiewit, Gilbane and WSP.
