Overview
Biotechnology uses science to solve practical problems by discovering new applications for organisms, their molecules and the cellular processes they perform. The degree is interdisciplinary, with teaching from biology, chemistry, physics, math, economics, engineering and management faculty.
Every major completes a capstone in the senior year plus research or an industry internship, with guidance from advisors. Sample courses include molecular biotechnology, a laboratory course, and biomaterials and medical devices. Outcomes involve molecular biology methods, bioengineering and materials ideas, and policy and management concepts.
Students can pursue distinction through strong science and math work and lab research. A student-run society offers social and professional events, and an environment-themed residential community is optional. Training targets a fast-growing industry that seeks technically skilled young professionals, and the program also lists a distinction for strong academic and research performance.
