Overview
This Newhouse major teaches strategic communication as a tool for building and protecting the reputation and purpose of companies and organizations. Students learn how to manage the relationship between an organization and its audiences.
Core skills include writing, design basics and speaking, along with the managerial steps of planning, research, running campaigns and judging results. Assignments produce campaign pieces, brochures, newsletters and press releases, while social analytics, multimedia narrative, media monitoring and crisis handling appear throughout. Faculty have handled corporate emergencies and nonprofit drives.
Students can work on campus publications, lead Hill Communications, a firm run by students, and submit work to a professional portfolio review. A senior trip to New York exposes them to leading PR operations. Graduates apply the training in industries from entertainment to sport.
