AA/AS in American Sign Language

Waubonsee's American Sign Language program teaches students the fundamentals of ASL, a distinct language used by the Deaf community. The program emphasizes both the linguistic and cultural aspects of sign language, preparing students to communicate effectively with deaf and hard of hearing individuals. This comprehensive foundation enables graduates to work in interpreting, education, and community service roles. The curriculum is taught by nationally certified interpreters and skilled native ASL users who actively participate in the Deaf community. Beyond the technical aspects of signing, students learn about Deaf culture, enabling them to approach their work with cultural competence. Upon completion, graduates have established themselves with a marketable skill that opens diverse career pathways in healthcare, education, government services, and non-profit organizations.
