The criminal justice major surveys the justice system and criminology, with topics ranging from legal principles and investigations to rehabilitation, restorative approaches, unusual forms of offending and unequal treatment within the system.
After the basics, students specialize through concentrations, minors, double majors or electives in topics like cybercrime, forensics and homicide. The department lists a wide range of electives each semester, and a criminology concentration gives majors a deeper look at crime and its causes.
Classes are usually small, taught by full-time faculty who share their own research and professional experience, and students can receive one-on-one instruction aimed at their goals. The program stresses real-world experience and preparation for careers across local, state and national government.
The major is housed in the College of Arts and Sciences at Westfield State University. Prospective students can request information, plan a campus visit or apply through the program page.
