History at Whitworth is presented as much more than memorizing facts. Students look at cultures around the world and across time, from antiquity to recent decades, studying subjects as varied as the end of imperial rule in China, shifting views of race and gender across Europe during its early modern period, and the American experience.
The curriculum develops skills in methodology, asking students to evaluate and explain evidence from both original and later accounts, and in argumentation, asking them to build claims about the past that rest on evidence. Students also learn to analyze diversity and power in human experience and to bring historical thinking to the formation of their own worldview and faith.
Options include a history major, a history and social studies major, and an American studies major, along with an international studies major with a history emphasis. Minors in history and in medieval and early modern studies are available.
