Communication Studies at Whitworth sits within a liberal arts setting and asks students to examine how people exchange meaning in many kinds of situations. Coursework begins with the basics of interpersonal interaction, covering perception, listening, conflict and nonverbal cues, and widens into the historical and philosophical ideas behind the field.
Students practice writing and public speaking so they can step into entry-level communication roles or continue to graduate study. They also reflect on how their own faith or worldview relates to communication, both as a body of theory and as a daily practice.
Beyond the major, the department supports several minors, including communication and technology, communication and culture, and visual communication. Those options let students pair the core curriculum with a more specialized emphasis that suits their goals.
