Overview
Université de Hearst is a small, French-language public university in Hearst, in Northeastern Ontario, with additional teaching campuses in Kapuskasing and Timmins.
It traces its roots to the Séminaire de Hearst, founded in 1953 by Bishop Louis Lévesque and the Diocese of Hearst, which became Collège de Hearst in 1959 and Collège universitaire de Hearst in 1972. For most of its history the institution operated as a college affiliated with Laurentian University in Sudbury (1963-2022), granting Laurentian degrees; it became a fully independent, degree-granting university on April 1, 2022.
Hearst is one of a small number of Canadian universities that teach exclusively in French, and it serves as a recruiting pool for the region's French-language elementary and secondary teachers. Its undergraduate curriculum runs on a block-course model ("cours en bloc"), with students taking one course at a time rather than several in parallel.
The university offers undergraduate Bachelor of Arts programs in psychology and interdisciplinary human and social sciences, plus a four-year Bachelor of Applied Arts in business administration, and belongs to the Association des collèges et universités de la francophonie canadienne (ACUFC) and Universities Canada.
As of 2025 it enrolled around 341 students under roughly 30 faculty members. Its tagline is "Repenser son univers" — "Rethink your universe."
