Overview
Liverpool John Moores University is a public university in Liverpool, in North West England.
It gained university status in 1992, when Liverpool Polytechnic and several older colleges dating back to 1823 were brought together under the new name, taken from local businessman Sir John Moores. Today LJMU teaches around 25,700 students, roughly 20,300 at undergraduate level and 5,400 at postgraduate level, alongside a further 23,000 studying through 17 partner institutions overseas, and employs close to 2,800 staff.
Its academic work is split across two faculties: the Faculty of Society and Culture, covering business, art and creative industries, education, humanities and social science, and law; and the Faculty of Health, Innovation, Technology and Science, covering biological and environmental sciences, computer science and mathematics, engineering and the built environment, nursing and allied health, pharmacy and biomolecular sciences, psychology, and sport and exercise sciences. The university also runs dedicated research institutes in astrophysics, public health and maritime studies, and offers degree apprenticeships in fields such as nursing, teaching and policing for local employers.
