Overview
London Metropolitan University is a public higher education institution in London, with sites in Holloway, Aldgate and Shoreditch.
Its roots trace to 1848, when the Metropolitan Evening Classes for Young Men were founded to educate the industrial classes; that institution grew into the City of London Polytechnic, while the Northern Polytechnic Institute (1896), Sir John Cass Technical Institute (1899) and North Western Polytechnic (1929) developed in parallel. The Northern Polytechnic became the Polytechnic of North London in 1971 and gained university status as the University of North London in 1992.
In 2002, London Guildhall University and the University of North London merged to form London Metropolitan University, the first merger between two universities in the UK. The university teaches across undergraduate, postgraduate, research degree and apprenticeship routes, with disciplines including journalism, science, art, architecture and design, and runs international pathway and study abroad programmes alongside a Centre for Equity and Inclusion and its London Met Lab knowledge-exchange initiative.
