Program details

Overview

Delivered in an accelerated format, this diploma gives students direct, practical exposure to the equipment and workflows used across film and screen-based media production, from initial concept through direction, cinematography, post-production and final delivery. Students work on both original student productions and real-world projects, mirroring the pace and expectations of the wider production industry. A field placement lets students experience the responsibilities of working on an actual film set while building connections with established industry professionals, drawing on the region's active local production sector. Graduates typically find entry-level roles at equipment rental businesses, government departments, advertising agencies, post-production facilities, or production houses.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: College Eligibility requires an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, or Mature Student status for applicants 19 or older without a diploma. Program Eligibility adds Grade 12 English (ENG4C or equivalent); the program page states no portfolio requirement or minimum GPA. International applicants must meet Algonquin's English Language Proficiency requirement: IELTS Academic overall band 6.0 with a minimum of 5.5 in each band, the Duolingo English Test at 110 overall with no component below 95, or TOEFL iBT at the score Algonquin publishes for the test's current format. Where qualified applicants exceed available places, Algonquin selects on English proficiency alone.

Application Details

Start Date: Fall and Winter
Application Deadline: Domestic applicants apply through ontariocolleges.ca: for September 2027 entry the application portal opens 26 September 2026, the equal consideration date is 1 February 2027, and offers must be accepted by 1 May 2027, while later applications are still assessed as space allows; Algonquin publishes no separate equal-consideration date for the January 2027 intake. International applicants apply directly via Algonquin's own International Application Portal, not ontariocolleges.ca; instead of one fixed date the college posts a program-by-program closing-date list shortly before each term starts - for Fall 2026 most programs closed 16 September 2026, technology programs by 9-10 September; no Winter 2027 or Fall 2027 international list has been posted yet, so admission remains effectively rolling until each list is published and fills. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
