Program details
Overview
This Bachelor of Arts Major, administered by Bishop's University's Department of Music within the Faculty of Humanities, examines music in relation to broader cultural, historical, and social contexts rather than focusing on performance alone. Coursework spans classical, popular, and world music traditions and can be combined with disciplines such as drama, history, or business. Classes are small, and admission additionally requires an audition and a letter of musical background. The program can be completed in three or four years, with intake in both the Fall and Winter terms. Students examine music's role in shaping culture across different societies and periods, building analytical and research skills alongside musical knowledge. Graduates pursue careers such as music director, journalist, publicist, arts administrator, radio programming manager, and roles in cultural and media organizations, as well as further study in music or related humanities fields.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Bishop's University's Music and Culture page publishes no admission requirements of its own and directs applicants to the university's general admission requirements. Quebec CEGEP applicants need an estimated minimum R-Score of 24, the standard threshold for undergraduate programs outside the School of Education; DEC holders may apply regardless of their program of study. Canadian high-school applicants need five Grade 12 university-preparatory courses, including Grade 12 English, with an estimated minimum overall average of 80%. International high-school applicants are assessed individually against an equivalent secondary credential. Applicants to this Major must also submit an audition and a letter of musical background, per the Music Admissions Information Sheet. English proficiency is required of every applicant unless met by a Quebec DEC, three years of secondary schooling or 30 post-secondary credits taught in English or French, or a qualifying test score: IELTS Academic 6.5 (no band below 6.0); TOEFL iBT 90/20 for tests before January 21, 2026, or 4.5/4.0 on the redesigned scale from that date; Cambridge B2 First/C1 Advanced/C2 Proficiency 176; PTE Academic 65/60; Duolingo English Test 115/90; or LanguageCert Academic 70-74/65.
