The Practical Nurse Diploma is an intensive five-term program at Bow Valley College that prepares students to deliver professional nursing care within a complex healthcare system. Coursework spans child care, maternity nursing, community health, mental wellness, seniors' care, and medicine, with knowledge built through classroom instruction, online courses, lab-based simulation, and clinical placements in a variety of care facilities. The program is accredited by the Canadian Association of Schools of Nursing (CASN) and is delivered through multiple pathways, offered face-to-face on campus, online with synchronous virtual classes, or through a combination of both formats. Students with prior health care aide training may receive transfer credit, and Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) is available for applicants with relevant experience. Graduates are prepared to write the national licensing examination and to practise as Licensed Practical Nurses across a range of healthcare settings in Alberta and Canada.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission requires a minimum of 60% in English Language Arts 30-1, or 70% in English Language Arts 30-2, or equivalent, together with credit in Math 20-1, or a minimum of 60% in Math 20-2, or equivalent, and a minimum of 60% in Biology 30 or equivalent, or 64% in Bow Valley College's Anatomy and Physiology course (ANAT1101). Health care aides may be eligible for transfer credit, and Prior Learning Assessment and Recognition (PLAR) is available. Applicants whose first language is not English must also meet the college's English language proficiency requirements, which for this program require IELTS Academic component scores of at least Listening 7.5, Reading 6.5, Writing 7.0, and Speaking 7.0, or a TOEFL iBT score of 92.
