This two-year, full-time diploma is one of three specialty options within BCIT's Mechanical Engineering Technology program, following a common first year shared across the Mechanical Design, Mechanical Manufacturing and Mechanical Systems streams. The Mechanical Manufacturing option focuses on manufacturing processes, engineering design, computer-aided design (CAD), materials science, and applied mathematics, preparing graduates for careers in industries such as aerospace, clean energy, and consumer products. Coursework covers CAD/CAM, CNC machining, product design, composites, prototyping, 3D printing, and quality control, combining classroom instruction with hands-on lab and shop work. The program is delivered on campus at the Burnaby campus and begins each September. Graduates may apply for student membership with the Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of British Columbia (ASTTBC) and can pursue registration as an Applied Science Technologist (AScT). Diploma graduates also have pathways to complete a related engineering degree, including reserved seats in BCIT's own Bachelor of Engineering program or degree-completion routes at other institutions.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Entry requires Category 2 English language proficiency (English Studies 12 at 67% or equivalent), Physics 11 at 73%, Chemistry 11 at 67%, and one of Pre-Calculus 12 at 73% or another acceptable BC/Yukon math course. The Mechanical Engineering Technology diploma shares a common first year with the Bachelor of Engineering degree; after first year, students rank their preference among the Mechanical Design, Mechanical Manufacturing and Mechanical Systems diploma options and the degree stream, and placement is competitive, based on first-year GPA when demand exceeds available seats. The program is open to international applicants, who must hold a valid BCIT study permit, and currently meets the eligible field of study requirement for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP).
