Program details

Overview

This two-year, full-time diploma is one of three specialty options within BCIT's Mechanical Engineering Technology program, following a common first year shared with the Mechanical Design, Mechanical Manufacturing and Bachelor of Engineering streams. The Mechanical Systems option focuses on designing and installing environmental systems in residential, commercial and industrial buildings, covering heating, ventilating and air conditioning (HVAC), plumbing and fire protection systems, energy management, and energy conversion. Instruction blends classroom lectures with practical laboratory sessions using current software and equipment, small-group tutorials, and a second-year capstone project that may include work experience with an industry sponsor. The program is delivered on campus at the Burnaby campus and begins each September. Graduates may apply for student membership with the Applied Science Technologists and Technicians of British Columbia (ASTTBC) and can pursue registration as an Applied Science Technologist (AScT). Diploma graduates also have pathways to complete a related engineering degree, including reserved seats in BCIT's own Bachelor of Engineering program or degree-completion routes at other institutions.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: Entry requires Category 2 English language proficiency (English Studies 12 at 67% or equivalent), Physics 11 at 73%, Chemistry 11 at 67%, and one of Pre-Calculus 12 at 73% or another acceptable BC/Yukon math course. The Mechanical Engineering Technology diploma shares a common first year with the Bachelor of Engineering degree; after first year, students rank their preference among the Mechanical Design, Mechanical Manufacturing and Mechanical Systems diploma options and the degree stream, and placement is competitive, based on first-year GPA when demand exceeds available seats. The program is open to international applicants, who must hold a valid BCIT study permit, and currently meets the eligible field of study requirement for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP).
