Overview
The Distribution Design for Electrical Utilities Microcredential program was created to meet the increasing need for distribution design specialists. This program will provide students with the industry-specific knowledge needed to start a career in electrical utility distribution design.
Based on basic knowledge of electrical technology, the program will develop students’ knowledge and skills so they can design simple overhead or underground distribution systems using industry standards and guidelines. These courses will provide critical skills related to the design of equipment, which will allow Canada to move towards the electrification of transportation and inclusion of small wind and solar resources in the grid. Topics may include electrical equipment, utility design standards, voltage drop, cable tension calculations, protection device selection and coordination, project management, conductor sizing, voltage levels, pole types, grounding, and more. Software may be used to demonstrate examples of distribution design techniques used in industry.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: The entry course of this micro-credential, ELEX 2000, carries no academic prerequisite; BCIT recommends, for applicants without industry experience or a diploma or degree in electrical engineering, first completing the bridging courses ELEX 0101 (Modern Power System and Circuit Fundamentals) and ELEX 0102 (Fundamentals of Power Systems and Circuits). Once enrolled, ELEX 2001 requires 60% in ELEX 2000 and ELEX 2002 requires 60% in ELEX 2001. No minimum GPA or English/French language test score is published. There is no formal application; students register for the courses directly and request the credential once complete. The program admits in September each year with ongoing processing, and international applicants may enrol but are not eligible for a study permit through it.

Openings are 9:00 am and deadlines 11:59 pm Pacific Time, moving to the next business day on a weekend. Admission is not institute-wide rolling, but many programs work first-qualified-first-accepted and can fill before the posted deadline, and several programs, mostly in Health Sciences, trades and graduate studies, run entirely separate application tables of their own. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
