Medieval and Renaissance Studies is a Bachelor of Arts program at Brock University's Faculty of Humanities, offered through the Centre for Medieval and Renaissance Studies (MARS) as a combined major. The program covers the period from late antiquity to the seventeenth century and is interdisciplinary, emphasizing the relationships among art, architecture, history, literature, music and thought from the era. Coursework ranges from the end of the Roman world to Renaissance Italy and from the Mediterranean to the Americas, engaging with authors such as Dante, Chaucer and Shakespeare as well as emergent and marginalized voices, and with the period's culture, music, art and architecture. Students develop skills in critical inquiry, analysis, argument and expression. Experiential learning opportunities include visits to local archives and study-abroad courses exploring medieval and early modern art and culture. A Minor in Medieval and Renaissance Studies is also offered. Graduates pursue careers such as archivist or librarian, editor or journalist, teacher, lawyer, and civil servant or diplomat.
