Biomedical and Electrical Engineering is a Bachelor of Engineering programme offered by Carleton University's Faculty of Engineering and Design, combining electrical and computer engineering to design medical technologies. Students develop expertise in electromagnetism, materials, signal processing, systems engineering and quantitative analysis, applying it to devices ranging from pacemakers and remote patient monitoring systems to medical imaging equipment such as MRI, ultrasound and X-ray machines. Elective options cover image processing, surgical robotics, integrated sensors and clinical engineering, with hands-on work in specialized facilities including the Biomedical Engineering Lab, the BioMechatronics Lab and the Microfabrication Facility. A paid Co-op option offers work terms of 4, 6, 8, 12 or 16 months, giving students workplace experience alongside their engineering studies. Graduates are prepared for careers designing and developing medical devices and technologies that combine electrical engineering with biomedical applications.
