Program details

Overview

Carleton's Biomedical Engineering master's program applies engineering principles to problems in medicine and biology, and is delivered through the Ottawa-Carleton Institute for Biomedical Engineering (OCIBME), a joint institute between Carleton University and the University of Ottawa. Students can pursue either a thesis-based Master of Applied Science or a coursework-based Master of Engineering, combining graduate coursework with directed study and, for the thesis stream, original research culminating in a thesis and oral presentation. The program is delivered in person over two years, with Fall, Winter, and Summer admission intakes, though deadlines differ by term and applicant type. The joint-institute structure gives students access to biomedical engineering faculty and facilities across both universities, spanning areas such as biomedical instrumentation, biomechanics, medical imaging, and biomaterials, preparing graduates for research or industry careers at the intersection of engineering and health sciences.
