This program leads to a Doctor of Philosophy in Biomedical Engineering at Carleton University, offered through the Ottawa-Carleton Institute for Biomedical Engineering, a joint institute with the University of Ottawa spanning seven academic units. It is thesis-based, and students combine thesis research with coursework, directed and individual study, and oral and written presentations to address problems in areas such as biomaterials, biomechanics, rehabilitation robotics, medical imaging processing, informatics and communications; research is carried out with clinical and industrial collaborators toward devices suitable for commercialization. The institute has ties to the Ottawa Hospital, one of the largest teaching hospitals in Canada, with specialty centres in cancer, heart, kidney, vision care and rehabilitation services, as well as to Health Canada and the National Research Council. Faculty research covers vital-sign monitoring, patient-specific orthopaedic implants, biomedical informatics, rehabilitation and wearable robotics, biosignal quality assessment, and the biomechanics of cartilage and osteoarthritis. The program normally takes four years to complete on a full-time basis, with admission for the Fall or Winter term.
