This program leads to a Doctor of Philosophy in Biology at Carleton University, offered through the Ottawa-Carleton Institute for Biology, a joint research collaboration with the University of Ottawa. It is thesis-based, with experiential learning through field work and lab work, and students choose a research area from Biochemistry and Physiology, Bioinformatics and Genomics, Ecology, Evolution and Conservation, Molecular Biology and Genetics, and Neurobiology and Behaviour; Collaborative Specializations in Biochemistry and in Chemical and Environmental Toxicology can be added to the degree. Exceptional applicants with an undergraduate degree may be considered for direct entry into the PhD without first completing a master's degree. Facilities include the Nesbitt Biology Building, with an aquatics research facility, controlled-environment rooms, growth chambers and greenhouses, and the National Wildlife Research Centre laboratories, also located on campus. The program normally takes four years to complete on a full-time basis, with admission for the Fall, Winter or Summer term.
