Humanities (Great Books) is a Bachelor of Humanities (BHum) program offered through Carleton University's College of the Humanities. The program covers ideas in art, philosophy, history, literature, classics, music, religion, and science through study of influential texts and artworks, including works by authors and figures such as Homer, Plato, Dante, Machiavelli, Shakespeare, Mozart, Mary Shelley, and Salman Rushdie, alongside the Bhagavad Gita, the Bible, and Algonquin myths. The curriculum is built around four core seminars covering different time periods and disciplines, delivered in small discussion groups with writing assignments. A combined Bachelor of Humanities and Biology option and a Bachelor of Journalism and Humanities option are also offered alongside the standard BHum degree. The program provides an interdisciplinary foundation for further study or careers in fields that draw on broad humanities training, including law, education, and public policy.
