This program leads to a Doctor of Philosophy in Building Engineering at Carleton University. It is thesis-based and gives students specializing in building performance, heritage conservation or fire safety engineering the opportunity to conduct research and development work that advances the building engineering profession. Exceptional applicants with an undergraduate degree may be considered for direct entry into the PhD without first completing a master's degree. Graduates have gone on to research and development roles in engineering companies as building scientists, energy modellers, sustainability consultants, heritage restoration and retrofit specialists, digital and computational modelling specialists, and fire safety engineers, as well as to faculty positions at Canadian universities and colleges and to public-sector research roles, including with the National Research Council and Natural Resources Canada. The program draws on Ottawa's proximity to government research and development laboratories such as the National Research Council. It normally takes four years to complete on a full-time basis, with admission for the Fall, Winter or Summer term.
