The Doctor of Philosophy in Economics at Carleton University is offered jointly with the Department of Economics at the University of Ottawa. The program emphasizes the application of economic theory to the analysis of Canadian economic policy and economic development. Students choose from eight specialization areas: econometrics, economic development, economics of the environment, industrial organization, international economics, labour economics, monetary economics, and public economics. Candidates complete coursework alongside independent research culminating in a doctoral dissertation. The nominal full-time length of the program is five years, with an annual intake in the Fall term. Graduates are prepared for academic and research careers as well as economic analysis and policy roles in government, international organizations, and the private sector. The Fall+Winter combined graduate fee for the program applies on a full-time basis, and candidates typically progress through coursework in the early years before shifting to full-time dissertation research and defence.
