Admission Requirements: Carleton's Master of Design requires candidates to have prior design training or professional experience. As with other Carleton graduate programs, applicants whose prior education was not in English must meet the university's English-language proficiency standard: IELTS Academic 6.5 overall (minimum 6.0 per band), TOEFL iBT 86 (minimum 22 writing/speaking, 20 reading/listening; for tests before 21 January 2026), Duolingo English Test 120 (minimum 110 writing/reading/speaking, 105 listening), Pearson PTE Academic 55 (minimum 47 per skill), CAEL 70 (minimum 60 per band), or Cambridge C1 Advanced/C2 Proficiency 176 (minimum 169 per component).
