Overview

This technical Diplôme d'études collégiales (DEC) in Mechanical Engineering Technology at Cégep de Jonquière trains technicians in both the design and manufacture of mechanical components. Core coursework covers mechanical-component design, fabrication processes, machining, technical drawing, and the operation of computer-controlled equipment. In the third year, students choose between a Mechanical Design option, focused on modelling parts with design software, performing calculations, and planning fabrication methods, and a Manufacturing option, focused on operating machinery, managing production, and building and maintaining prototypes. Instruction takes place in classrooms and laboratories equipped with computer-aided design software and multi-axis milling machines, and students apply their skills to concrete projects such as building a bicycle, a solar-powered vehicle, or a race car. A paid internship in the third year gives students workplace experience before graduation. The program suits students interested in mechanical design and hands-on manufacturing work, and it requires secondary-level mathematics and physics for admission. Graduates typically work as technicians, programmers, technical representatives, or maintenance specialists in sectors such as aluminum production, pulp and paper, aerospace, mining, and engineering firms.
