It was formed by merging several existing institutions, including the Séminaire de Chicoutimi, the Hôtel-Dieu Saint-Vallier nursing school, the Institut familial de Chicoutimi, the Institut de technologie de Chicoutimi, and the École de Commerce de Chicoutimi. The college now serves roughly 3,000 students with the support of around 600 staff members.
Cégep de Chicoutimi offers pre-university Diplôme d'études collégiales programs in natural sciences, humanities, visual arts, literature and communication, and history and civilization, preparing graduates for university studies. Its technical DEC programs span nursing, dental hygiene, civil and electrical engineering technologies, forestry, computer science, business administration and recreation management, several with work-study alternance and DEC-BAC university pathways.
