This apprenticeship program trains apprentices to support people with intellectual disabilities at different stages of their lives, working across education, housing, employment support, social independence, and recreation settings. Apprentices develop specialized knowledge and practical skills to collaborate with families and support networks. Entry requires a sponsoring employer who provides and supervises practical, on-the-job training hours, combined with theoretical instruction delivered online on dates set by the college. The program consists of a single 780-hour level covering courses such as intellectual disabilities, philosophy of support, social services, health and wellbeing, person-centred planning, intervention strategies, teaching strategies, response to abuse, pharmacology, and social integration. Completion leads to an apprenticeship certificate under trade code 620D, issued through Skilled Trades Ontario. Apprentices may enrol at any time in a diploma pathway toward the Developmental Services Worker diploma, which requires passing the apprenticeship program, obtaining the apprenticeship certificate, and completing the pathway's own coursework. The program is delivered by Collège Boréal in partnership with Ontario's Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development and Skilled Trades Ontario.
