Commercial Driver is a 13-week certificate program at College of the North Atlantic, delivered on-campus at the Bay St. George campus, that trains students in the safe and effective operation of tandem trucks and tractor-trailer units. Training combines classroom instruction with yard and highway driving practice, and covers preventive maintenance, defensive driving, fuel conservation, cargo delivery, logbook maintenance and vehicle inspection. Students complete certifications in Transportation of Dangerous Goods, Air Brakes (9A), WHMIS, First Aid, Powerline Hazards awareness and the Professional Driver Improvement Course. Admission requires a valid Class 05 licence held for at least 12 months, a medical examination with vision test, an acceptable driving abstract and a passing commercial written test, in addition to high school graduation or an equivalent academic pathway. The program is offered each September, January and April, and prepares graduates for employment as commercial truck drivers.
