Art & Design Essentials is a flexible, two-year part-time certificate program at College of the North Atlantic covering foundational artistic disciplines, including traditional drawing, two- and three-dimensional design, photography, colour theory, art history, digital imaging, time-based media and webpage development. The 16-course program can be completed in full for the Certificate or taken as individual courses, and is offered both online in an asynchronous format and on-campus at the Prince Philip Drive campus, with on-campus intake offered in alternate years. Coursework builds a portfolio intended to prepare students for further study in art, media and design fields. Admission is open to high school graduates with the required average, holders of a College Transition Certificate or equivalent Adult Basic Education, or mature students assessed individually. The program begins each September. Graduates pursue further post-secondary study or entry-level creative work such as freelance art, gallery assistance or community arts programming.
