Overview
Cook is a 34-week, Red Seal-aligned certificate program at College of the North Atlantic that trains students in the preparation and presentation of food for a range of settings, covering menu development, food safety, sanitation standards and kitchen production procedures. The program is delivered on-campus at the Bay St. George and Prince Philip Drive campuses, with intake each September. Admission requires high school graduation or an equivalent academic pathway, and international applicants must meet the college's English language proficiency requirements. Because the role requires respirator fit testing, students with facial hair are required to be clean-shaven for testing. Graduates are prepared for entry-level cooking positions in restaurants, institutional kitchens and other food service settings, and can pursue Red Seal certification as a Journeyperson through further apprenticeship.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants must meet one of the following: high school graduation; Adult Basic Education (Level III) graduation with a General College Profile (mathematics and science courses recommended); a Trades Bridging Certificate; a College Transition Certificate; or Mature Student status (age 19 or older, out of school for at least one year), assessed individually. International applicants must meet the college's English language proficiency requirements. Because the program requires respirator fit testing, students with facial hair will be required to be clean-shaven for fit testing.
