Overview

Early Childhood Education at College of the North Atlantic leads to a Diploma of Applied Arts, delivered over two years across five semesters including an intersession. Coursework covers child development from birth to age twelve, curriculum design, behaviour guidance, creative experiences, health and safety, nutrition, observation and documentation, inclusion practices, family engagement, and an introduction to child care administration. The program includes four mandatory field placements, two in each year, at approved early learning settings; at the Corner Brook and Prince Philip Drive campuses, placements may take place at the college's onsite demonstration child care centre. Delivery is on-campus, offered at the Carbonear, Corner Brook, Gander, Port aux Basques, and Prince Philip Drive campuses, with a synchronous online option also available. The program suits students with patience, physical stamina, and strong communication and interpersonal skills who want to work directly with young children. Graduates are qualified for employment with organizations providing early learning and child care, and with relevant work experience may go on to develop programs for, or supervise, child care services in communities across the province.

Requirements

Minimum GPA: 60.00 / %
Admission Requirements: Direct entry requires a Provincial High School Graduation Certificate with a 60% average across eight 3000-level credits, or equivalent; College Transition, Adult Basic Education (Level III) General/Business-Related/Degree and Technical Profile with a 60% pass average, and mature-student (19+, one year out of school) routes are also accepted. English proficiency is not set at programme level and instead follows CNA's institution-wide requirement: IELTS Academic overall band 6.0, TOEFL iBT 79, PTE Academic 53, or Duolingo 105-110, waived after three years of English-medium schooling. Before online registration, accepted students must submit a certified criminal record check, a vulnerable-sector check, and current immunization records, each dated within three months of the first day of classes.

Application Details

Start Date: September
Application Deadline: College of the North Atlantic accepts domestic applications on a rolling, first-come basis with no fixed opening or closing date published for any intake; the college states applications for a program remain open until it is filled, which for competitive programmes such as Practical Nursing can mean the intake closes before the term starts. International applicants apply directly to CNA; for the Fall 2026 intake the college published a closing date of 30 April 2026 (with late applications from students already holding a study permit still considered), but no equivalent Fall 2027 or Winter 2027 international date has yet been posted. Admission is therefore effectively rolling for domestic applicants and governed by a single seasonal cutoff, not yet republished, for international ones. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
