This Doctor of Philosophy in Social and Cultural Analysis combines elements of anthropology and sociology to examine a range of social questions, including social inequality, gender, technology, food, environment, urban development, and the politics of representation. Students conduct independent research within this interdisciplinary framework, drawing on methods and theory from both disciplines and working with faculty across the two home departments. The thesis-based degree requires a minimum of 90 credits, comprising required courses, electives in anthropology or sociology, comprehensive examinations, a thesis proposal, and a 57-credit doctoral thesis written under faculty supervision. The program spans four years, is offered at the Sir George Williams (SGW) campus, and admits students in the Fall term only, with an application deadline of December 1.
