Overview
Practicum allows students to apply their learning with a variety of clinically supervised practicum experiences that are designed to prepare you to function as a graduate in diverse settings. Placements are located at various local hospitals and agencies throughout Durham Region and at times, in the immediate surrounding areas. Placements may take place on weekdays or weekends with the exception of Semester 5, Professional Practice V (consolidation), where students are expected to be available to follow their preceptor’s schedule. Students are responsible for their own transportation to attend practicum. Please note that hospital placement may begin as early as 06:00 hours.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission requires an Ontario Secondary School Diploma or Mature Student Status, with Grade 12 English at the C or U level at a minimum 60 per cent, Grade 12 Mathematics at C, M or U at a minimum 65 per cent, and Grade 11 or 12 Biology and Chemistry each at C, M or U; basic keyboarding and computer skills are recommended. The programme is flagged highly competitive with its own selection process and application deadline. Durham College names Practical Nursing as one of two programmes held to a higher English-proficiency bar than its general diploma policy: IELTS Academic 7.0 with no band below 6.5, or TOEFL iBT 5.0 overall with no section below 5.0 (the scale used for tests taken on or after 21 January 2026); PTE Academic, CAEL and the Duolingo English Test are not accepted for this programme. Before practicum, students must pass a Criminal Reference Check with Vulnerable Sector Screening, hold current Level C CPR certification with mask-fit testing, complete an entry immunisation form, and pass N95 mask-fit testing.
