Overview
This certificate in fire safety emergency operations management at Polytechnique Montréal trains civil security personnel to prepare and implement the plans, measures, and resources needed to respond to a disaster of any scale. Coursework addresses the legislative and regulatory context of civil and emergency security in Quebec, and teaches students to prepare an organizational security plan, develop a fire safety and intervention plan, coordinate emergency response measures, and manage a direct or unified command post along with exceptional cases. The certificate totals 30 credits, delivered part-time during the day, both online and in person. It can be combined with two other eligible certificates toward a cumulative bachelor's degree in fire emergency prevention and management. It is aimed at supervising officers and managers, active firefighters pursuing officer III or IV certification, and civil security professionals in industrial, municipal, or government organizations, leading to roles such as emergency measures and civil security manager and civil security risk management advisor.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission requires holding, or being close to obtaining, the Officer II fire-service certification; or the Officer I certification plus at least two years of relevant experience; or completion of the 1st-cycle microprogram in Gestion de la sécurité civile et d'urgence majeure with a cumulative average of at least 2.0/4.0. Applicants must also meet Polytechnique Montréal's language requirement for certificate programs: proof of intermediate-advanced French (CEFR B2) at the time of application, through an approved test unless exempt. The certificate is offered part-time only; regular courses run during the day on an irregular schedule confirmed once the term timetable is published, and the prescribed course sequence must be followed. Equivalencies or exemptions may apply to individual required, elective, or free-choice courses under the university's standard rules, and out-of-program courses are capped at 6 credits per certificate.
