Program details

Overview

This English for Academic Purposes program is structured as 10 eight-week levels, two per college semester. Each level includes seven weeks of intensive training in academic English skills such as grammar, reading, writing, listening, speaking and pronunciation, followed by an eighth week of experiential learning activities, including workshops, excursions and events, to practice those skills. Students must reach a minimum grade of 70% to advance to the next level.

Requirements

Admission Requirements: This program is open to Canadian citizens, permanent residents and convention refugees who hold the equivalent of a high-school diploma from a non-English-speaking country; the page states it is not open to international applicants. Rather than a fixed English test score, applicants must contact [email protected] before applying on ontariocolleges.ca to book an English-language placement test; Fanshawe evaluates every prospective student through a computer-based listening and reading assessment, a writing sample and a conversation with an EAP instructor to set their starting level, though an existing IELTS, TOEFL or Cambridge score can also be used for placement. No fixed minimum grade, portfolio or interview is listed. Applicants admitted under convention-refugee or protected-person status must hold a valid study permit before starting, and Fanshawe notes a permit can take up to six months, so early application is recommended.

International applicants apply directly to Fanshawe (CAD 100 fee) and have no single published cut-off date; instead, proof of study-permit approval is due 9 December 2026 for a January 2027 start and 5 April 2027 for a May 2027 start, with all admission conditions cleared by 15 December 2026 and 15 April 2027 respectively.
