Overview
This course will provide the student with an introduction to community resources and capacity building and apply that knowledge through a community mapping project. Students will learn about the diversity of resources that make up a community through exploration of; Individual Capacities/Assets, Local Associations & Organizations, and Local Institutions. Through the community mapping experience, students will be able to identify local resources & services, recognizing the strengths/assets, challenges/gaps and the impact on individuals, families, and neighbourhoods which they will present to their class bringing awareness of the resources throughout the London community. Students will also become familiar with the SSW Program Manual expectations & requirements through review of the SSW Program Manual.

Admission Requirements: Admission requires one of: an Ontario College Diploma from Fanshawe's School of Community Studies with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.0; a university degree in Psychology, Sociology, or a related Social Sciences discipline; or an equivalent qualification from another institution, as judged by the College. Applicants whose first language is not English must meet Fanshawe's Diplomas, Advanced Diplomas & Certificates English requirement published on the programme page: IELTS Academic overall 6.0 with no band below 5.5, TOEFL iBT 79 (2026-scale equivalent overall 4.5, no band below 4.0), PTE Academic minimum 53 (no band below 45), CAEL overall 60 (no band below 50, 80 in listening), Cambridge English 169 (no skill below 162), Duolingo 105 (no score below 95), or LanguageCert Academic 65 (no skill below 60).

Application Deadline:Domestic applicants apply through ontariocolleges.ca: for Fall 2027 entry, applications open in early October 2026 and the equal-consideration date is 1 February 2027, after which later applications are assessed on a first-come basis until seats fill; non-competitive programs begin receiving offers from 1 November 2026, competitive-program offers go out by 30 March 2027, and 1 May 2027 is the usual deadline to accept an offer.
