Overview
Infrastructure is the glue that keeps cities and towns connected, vibrant, and safe. From water, to storm, sewer and highway systems, our health and safety relies on trained and experienced civil engineers to maintain, design and build the vital infrastructure of our cities and towns.With Fanshawe’s Civil Engineering Technology program, you'll study structural engineering concepts like the design of steel frame and reinforced concrete buildings. In our civil engineering courses you will analyze theories for the treatment of water, sewage and solid wastes. You will learn how to select and test construction materials and develop skills in computer assisted design (CAD) and drafting, electronic surveying methods and writing technical reports. With a diploma in civil engineering you will be trained to ensure that our communities remain safe and connected by learning on cutting-edge engineering technology, and with in-class lectures. As well, you'll receive hands-on work experience in the field of civil engineering, with a full twelve months of paid co-op.This three-year co-operative program provides training in both the municipal and structural areas. The design of steel frame and reinforced concrete buildings is studied in the structural courses. Training is provided in materials testing and computer-aided drafting. Municipal topics include the design and construction of water distribution systems, storm, and sanitary sewerage networks, storm water management and highways. Theories for the treatment of water, sewage, and solid wastes are analyzed. Survey courses provide training in the use of high-tech survey equipment and techniques of plane surveying, as related to the profession of a Civil Engineering Technologist. Applied research activities by Professors expose students to real life engineering practices, challenges and solutions.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Admission requires an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent, with Grade 12 English (C or U) and Grade 12 Math (C or U), Foundations for College Mathematics (MAP4C) accepted only at a minimum 60% where Advanced Functions/MCT4C is not held. Applicants whose first language is not English must present one of: IELTS Academic overall 6.0 with no band below 5.5; TOEFL iBT 79; PTE Academic 53; CAEL overall 60 with no band below 50; Cambridge English (FCE/CAE/CPE) 169 overall with no skill below 162; or Fanshawe's own ESL/GAP5 pathway (Level 8 at 80%, Level 9 at 75%, Level 10 at 70%). All test results must be less than two years old. The program page states no portfolio, interview, or other selection condition beyond these academic and language requirements.
