Overview

Child Development Practitioner (CDP) is a part-time apprenticeship program delivered by George Brown Polytechnic's School of Early Childhood on behalf of Ontario's Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development. It is designed for people already working or volunteering in early childhood settings who want to earn CDP certification while remaining employed. Apprentices complete 23 in-school training modules delivered in the evenings, currently offered in a hybrid format combining in-person and online instruction. The program also includes six field placements, five completed with the apprentice's current employer and a final three-week advanced placement completed at a George Brown Lab School. In-person classes are held at George Brown Polytechnic's campus at Toronto Metropolitan University in downtown Toronto. The program leads to a George Brown College Certificate and takes 2.5 to 3 years to complete on a part-time basis. Graduates can pursue roles in child care programs, early years programs, therapeutic nursery programs, pediatric playrooms and family resource programs, or bridge into the Early Childhood Education diploma by completing six additional courses.
