Overview
Child Development Practitioner is an apprenticeship program at Seneca Polytechnic for people who are working, or have worked, in early childhood education. Students register as an apprentice through Skilled Trades Ontario and complete 23 in-class evening courses covering child development, curriculum planning, health, safety, nutrition and professional practice, delivered in Seneca's hybrid format with some coursework online and some completed in person, over three years or as set by industry guidelines. Graduates receive a Certificate of Apprenticeship and an Ontario College Certificate, with the option to continue on to an Early Childhood Education diploma. Admission requires that applicants be at least 16 years old; be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or able to provide proof of asylum or refugee claimant status to Skilled Trades Ontario; hold legal permission to work in Canada; meet the OSSD (or equivalent) education requirement; and have a sponsor in Ontario. Level 1 coursework (the first two semesters) is fully funded by the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development.

Admission Requirements: Be at least 16 years old; be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or able to provide proof of asylum or refugee claimant status to Skilled Trades Ontario; register and maintain membership in good standing with Skilled Trades Ontario; hold legal permission to work in Canada (e.g. a valid Social Insurance Number); meet the education requirement of an Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD) or equivalent; and have a sponsor in Ontario. Eligibility criteria are set by the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development and Skilled Trades Ontario.
