Overview
This 90-credit doctoral programme, offered jointly with Universite Laval's department of geology and geological engineering, provides advanced specialisation in fields of fundamental or applied geology and geological engineering such as hydrogeology, volcanology, environmental geology, geothermal and renewable energy, mineral and petroleum exploration, palaeoenvironments, and coastal engineering. Students choose between two areas of concentration: geodynamics and resources, or geoengineering and environment. All admitted students receive an INRS scholarship, and the programme gives access to an extensive research network, including the Quebec Geoscience Pole partnership with Natural Resources Canada. The 90 credits comprise six optional credits, five credits for comprehensive examinations, and a 79-credit thesis. The programme leads to the degree of Philosophiae doctor (Ph.D.), with admission possible in the fall, winter, or summer term.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Applicants must hold a master's degree in science or a diploma judged equivalent, or otherwise show an above-average academic record together with demonstrated research aptitude. The application must include strong letters of recommendation, the written agreement of a thesis supervisor confirming the feasibility of the project and the resources available, a thesis prospectus outlining the research problem, objectives, hypotheses, and methodology, and a roughly two-page text demonstrating the applicant's motivation and the fit between their prior training and the intended research.
