Program details

Overview

This 90-credit interdisciplinary doctoral programme examines population transformations and their interaction with social, political, and environmental change, drawing on sociology, demography, geography, economics, anthropology, and history. Students study topics such as family dynamics, gender and sexuality, youth trajectories, population health, economic inequality, and the experience of immigration. The programme is offered through four areas of concentration: social statistics and demography, family, youth, and populations and societies. Teaching is delivered across the Montreal and Quebec City campuses, linked by interactive videoconferencing so that students at either location can take part in the same seminars. Candidates must complete a minimum of six trimesters, including at least three on a full-time basis, and must secure the agreement of a thesis supervisor before being admitted. The programme leads to the degree of Philosophiae doctor (Ph.D.), with admission possible in the fall, winter, or summer term.

Minimum GPA: 3.20 / 4.3
Admission Requirements: Applicants must hold a second-cycle diploma or the equivalent, with a minimum cumulative average of 3.2 on 4.3 (or the equivalent); files between 2.8 and 3.2 may exceptionally be considered. Candidates must show prior exposure to population-related themes, knowledge equivalent to one of the programme's master's concentrations (with supplementary coursework possible where needed), and a strong academic record with demonstrated research aptitude. Applicants need a sufficient knowledge of spoken and written French and a reading comprehension of English, and must secure the agreement of a thesis supervisor before admission.
