Overview

The Power Engineering: 3rd Class Co-op Certificate is a four-month, in-person technical training program for certified 4th Class Power Engineers advancing toward 3rd Class certification. Students deepen their knowledge of high-pressure steam systems, turbines, and compressors while preparing for Alberta Boiler Safety Association certification examinations. Eligible students may complete an additional six-month, paid co-op work placement that provides ABSA-recognized steam time toward certification. Admission requires successful completion of a 4th Class Power Engineering certificate, the 4th Class Power Engineering Parts A and B theory from a recognized post-secondary institution, and a 200-hour Power Lab course from a recognized institution. Graduates who achieve a minimum of 65% in each course are eligible for program certification and to write Alberta Boiler Safety Association examinations. The program is not open to international students because of its co-op work-term component.
