Overview
The Environmental Studies Associate of Arts Degree is a two-year, university-transferable interdisciplinary programme offered through Langara College's Department of Interdisciplinary Studies. Coursework draws on four core subject areas - biology, chemistry, English, and geography - combined with courses specific to environmental studies, and electives chosen across the college to match individual student interests. A one-week field school is conducted at the end of the second year of study. The programme addresses environmental understanding, protection, and remediation, and gives students the awareness, knowledge, and experience needed to address environmental issues arising from human activity. Credits are university-transferable and can be applied toward the first two years of a bachelor's degree at partner institutions. The programme is available on a full-time or part-time basis, with intakes in January, May, and September. As of the Fall 2026 semester, new applications to the Associate of Arts stream have been suspended until further notice.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: Domestic applicants require BC Grade 12 graduation (or equivalent) or must be 19 years of age or older; international applicants require BC Grade 12 graduation (or equivalent). Applicants must meet Langara's Category 3 English language proficiency requirement (for example IELTS Academic 6.5, TOEFL iBT 80, Duolingo English Test 110, CAEL 60, or PTE Academic 56). Students who do not meet this level directly may need to complete one or more additional English courses to fulfill the prerequisites of required English courses in the program.
