Overview
The Doctor of Philosophy in Mental Health is offered by the Department of Psychiatry in the Faculty of Medicine & Health Sciences. The program provides research-intensive training in the basic, applied, and social sciences relevant to psychiatry, with a focus on mental health services and policy, social and cultural psychiatry, and clinical and transnational psychiatry. Students take part in weekly research seminars, global mental health rounds, Indigenous mental health workshops, the Summer Program in Cultural Psychiatry, and events organized by the Advanced Study Institute in Cultural Psychiatry. Admission draws candidates from a range of backgrounds, including psychology, neuroscience, sociology, medical anthropology, social sciences, nursing, and medicine. Students are supported by stipends from their thesis supervisor, external fellowships, and departmental awards. The program equips graduates with skills in literature synthesis, program development, and scientific communication for careers in academia or industry, within a department active in neuroscience, psychotherapy, diagnostic methods, and therapeutic interventions research.

Admission Requirements: An eligible Master's degree with a CGPA of 3.3/4.0, or a GPA of 3.5/4.0 in the last two years of full-time study, is required. English-language proficiency is required: TOEFL iBT overall score of 86 or higher with no less than 20 in each of the four component scores, TOEFL PBT overall score of 567 or higher, or IELTS with a minimum band score of 6.5.
