This PhD, offered by the School of Social Work in the Faculty of Arts, is a research-intensive program combining collaborative and rigorous training. Students develop analytic and critical-thinking skills applicable to direct practice, theory, and policy, and generate original research on social problems that inform social work knowledge and practice. Faculty expertise spans aging, social exclusion, child welfare, international social welfare, Indigenous communities, violence against women and children, health and disability, poverty and social development, migration, and community organizing. The School is a member of the International Association of Schools of Social Work and the Canadian Association for Social Work Education. Graduates pursue careers in university teaching and research, policy development, and social services leadership and management. The program is jointly offered with Universite de Montreal and UQAM. Admission requires an eligible bachelor's degree and proof of English-language proficiency; application documents are listed on the department website.
