Overview
The Finance Major is a component of the Bachelor of Commerce offered by the Desautels Faculty of Management, described on its official page as a 30-credit sequence of finance coursework within the program's 72-credit total, layered on top of the standard B.Com. Management Core that all Desautels students complete. The major is intended to meet demand for expertise in finance as a business function, and its coursework aims to develop in-depth knowledge of finance theory, the operation of financial institutions, investment analysis, risk management, and applied financial techniques. The Management Core preceding the finance-specific coursework covers financial accounting, organizational behaviour, business statistics, data programming for business, managerial economics, and macroeconomic analysis relevant to firms, giving students a broad management foundation before they specialize. According to the program's own description, graduates most often find employment in investment and commercial banking, manufacturing and service firms, non-profit organizations and governments, and other non-financial firms, reflecting the range of settings where financial expertise is applied. The major suits Desautels students who want to concentrate their commerce degree in finance, whether aiming toward banking, corporate finance roles, or financial analysis positions after graduation.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: The Finance Major page sets no admission criteria of its own; it only lists the Management Core and major courses. Entry into the Bachelor of Commerce is decided by the Desautels Faculty of Management, whose own admission page states the BCom is highly selective and that meeting its minimum requirements does not guarantee acceptance, deferring the detailed criteria to McGill's Undergraduate Admissions Guide. Quebec CEGEP graduates are admitted directly with a Diploma of Collegial Studies including the Management-required prerequisites; applicants from other Canadian provinces are assessed on their senior secondary record (Ontario applicants on the average of their 'Top 6' 4U/4M courses); international applicants are assessed by their own educational system and normally require an additional Freshman year. English proficiency is required unless exempt: IELTS Academic 6.5 with no component below 6.0, TOEFL iBT 90, Duolingo 125, or PTE Academic 65.
