The Physics and Astronomy PhD at McMaster University is a thesis-based doctoral program in the Faculty of Science, delivered through the Department of Physics and Astronomy. Students conduct original research in one of eight areas: astrobiology, astrophysics, biophysics, computational and theoretical physics, elementary particle physics, laser physics and quantum optics and ultracold atoms, quantum condensed matter, and soft condensed matter. Admission requires a Master's degree in Physics, Astronomy or a related area. The program is structured as a four-year, full-time thesis degree, with a typical intake each September. Applications completed by January 31 receive full consideration for department scholarships, while applications are accepted until April 30. The breadth of research areas allows students to work across experimental and theoretical physics, as well as astrophysics and biophysics, under the supervision of a faculty member whose research interests align with the student's chosen area of study within the department.
