Awi'nakola describes a connection between land, sea, and people, and the program pairs classroom instruction with land-based cultural learning, drawing on Kwakwaka'wakw and Kwak'wala ways of knowing to inform academic content. Students learn basic Kwak'wala conversation, structure, and pronunciation alongside English and Math coursework, and take part in land-based activities such as seasonal cultural practices, cedar weaving, and traditional food and medicine gathering, along with visits to local communities. Completion leads to a statement of completion together with Adult Basic Education course credits.
Requirements
Admission Requirements: This certificate is open to domestic applicants only, and the programme page sets no subject-specific entry grades of its own: it lists only the courses (one Kwak'wala language course plus two further courses drawn from Math, English, and First Nations Student Skills options) that a student must pass to complete the credential, with no separate admission gate ahead of them. Admission therefore follows North Island College's general domestic requirement: applicants must have graduated from secondary school (or equivalent), or be at least 18 during the calendar year of study, and must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, protected person/refugee, or hold permission to study in Canada. No English-language test is required, since the program is domestic-only and includes English coursework. Applicants apply through EducationPlannerBC, create a myNIC account, and submit transcripts (or complete an assessment) before accepting an admission offer and paying the program deposit.
Application Details
Start Date:Fall and Winter
Application Deadline:North Island College's domestic applications open at the beginning of October each year for the following academic year; unlimited-entry programmes admit on a rolling, first-come-first-served basis with deadlines effectively at the term start (September 1, January 1 or May 1), while limited-entry programmes close earlier: the last Monday of August for a September start, the third Friday of December for a January start. International applicants apply through EducationPlannerBC; for the current cycle NIC has published deadlines of 1 May 2026 for September 2026 entry and 31 August 2026 for January 2027 entry, with no later 2027 intake deadline yet posted. Admission is otherwise rolling until seats fill. These are institution-wide dates; this programme publishes no deadline of its own.
